Blue Route – Doorus and Aughinish

Distance:

27km

Est. Time:

2 to 3 hours

Total Elevation:

376m

A gentle and flat coastal route taking in stunning view of the sea, a visit to the beach and a Martello tower.

This relaxing coastal cycle is one of the most scenic routes around Kinvara, offering gentle terrain, beautiful sea views, and a chance to explore some of the area’s most interesting historical landmarks. Beginning in Kinvara village, you’ll follow the main road for 2km before turning onto a quiet countryside lane that winds through peaceful farmland. After about 9km you’ll arrive at your first point of interest, Lynch’s Pier.

The Lynch family were one of the original Tribes of Galway – a prominent merchant family whose influence helped shape Galway City. They once farmed fruit and vegetables on this side of the bay, transporting their produce by boat from this very pier back to the city. Today, Lynch’s Pier is a serene and photogenic spot, offering a glimpse into the region’s trading history and coastal heritage.

Aughinish Island & Martello Tower

Continuing for another 5km, the route brings you across the causeway to Aughinish Island. Although the island is attached to County Galway by this narrow causeway, it actually lies within County Clare. Historically, Aughinish was once connected to the Clare mainland until a major tsunami in 1755 altered the coastline and reshaped the area permanently.

On the island, you’ll find a well-preserved Martello Tower, built by the British during the Napoleonic Wars as part of a defensive network designed to protect Ireland from potential invasion. The tower stands proudly on the landscape and offers a fascinating insight into 19th-century coastal defence. Aughinish itself is a peaceful, windswept place to pause, explore, and take in expansive views over Galway Bay.

Traught Beach

Leaving Aughinish, the route returns to the mainland, and at the small village of Nogra, you can turn left to cycle out to Traught Beach. This quiet sandy beach is a favourite with locals for summer swimming and with hardy sea swimmers all year round. It’s an ideal spot to take a break, enjoy the views, and soak up the fresh Atlantic air before returning along the same road back toward Kinvara village.
