Explore the Burren Lowlands on this beautiful ride, with a stunning section through the woodlands of Coole Park, and a visit to an ancient round tower.

This scenic cycling route invites you to explore the Burren Lowlands at a relaxed pace, taking in quiet rural roads, peaceful woodlands, and one of Ireland’s most impressive monastic sites.

Beginning in Kinvara village, you’ll travel approximately 10km along a quiet local road, passing farmland, stone walls, and scattered homes before reaching the entrance to Garryland Nature Reserve the gateway to Coole Park.

Coole Park

From Garryland, the route leads onto a beautiful, tree-lined road that winds gently through the woods toward Coole Park. Closed to cars, this peaceful stretch offers a calming and immersive ride surrounded by native Irish woodland, filled with birdsong and the scent of deciduous trees. It’s one of the most tranquil sections of any cycle in the region and a highlight of the entire route.

After roughly 5km, you’ll arrive at Coole Park, a site of tremendous cultural and historical importance. Once the home of Lady Gregory, Coole Park became a meeting place for some of Ireland’s most celebrated literary figures, including W.B. Yeats, J.M. Synge, and other writers of the Irish Literary Revival. The estate’s former stables have been transformed into a café and museum, where you can enjoy a delicious lunch or coffee before exploring the exhibits and learning more about the estate’s literary and artistic past.

Round Tower at Kilmacduagh

Leaving Coole Park, the route retraces the same woodland road back to Garryland before continuing for approximately 4km to the remarkable Round Tower at Kilmacduagh. Standing at 32 metres high, this leaning round tower along with the ruins of the ancient monastery offers a striking glimpse into early medieval Ireland. Visitors are welcome to walk through the grounds, imagining monastic life as it existed many centuries ago. It’s one of the most atmospheric stops on the route and a site rich in heritage and storytelling.

Burren Nature Sanctuary

From Kilmacduagh, the route heads back toward Kinvara, with the option to stop at the Burren Nature Sanctuary along the way. This familyfriendly attraction offers a beautiful nature trail, showcasing the geology, flora, and wildlife of the Burren, along with several activities such as the popular Pig Walk, which can be booked in advance. It’s a lovely way to round off your journey and experience another dimension of the Burren’s diverse landscapes.
